We embarked on a challenging venture to deliver design drafting for several National Broadband Network (NBN™) projects. These projects spanned a range of categories including BSOD, SD1, SD2, Tech Choice, WBA, and FTTx Capacity.

Despite their effectiveness, traditional methods were often time-consuming and prone to human error. Recognising this, we explored the possibilities of automating parts of this process to improve efficiency and accuracy. We sought to provide a solution that could streamline the design drafting process, reducing the time taken and increasing accuracy when compared with traditional manual methods.

Solution

The scope of our project included integrating automation into the design drafting process for various NBN™ projects. We sought to do this by introducing our internally developed tool, iCAD, into the process. The approach involved automating the design process within AutoCAD, whilst also using FME to auto translate spatial files into AutoCAD format.

We implemented iCAD to automate significant parts of the design process, which revolutionised our approach and considerably cut down on manual effort. Alongside this, we created dedicated workspaces in FME that could automatically translate spatial files into AutoCAD, thus further streamlining the process.

Results

With our solution, we witnessed a notable transformation in the design drafting process. The implementation of iCAD and FME workspaces successfully improved the efficiency and accuracy of our design drafting process for NBN projects.

We were able to achieve a significant 90% reduction in time spent on the design process, while simultaneously maintaining high standards of output quality.
